On January 28th + 29th, 2022, the virtual, two-day online event of the “Bundesnetzwerk 3R” (Federal Network 3Rs) initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) took place. The new national network is intended as a focal point to make an important contribution to the networking of all relevant actors so that the development and application of alternative methods are sustainably disseminated and applied in order to completely replace animal experiments in the medium or long term.

With the establishment and development of the “Bundesnetzwerk 3R” (Federal Network 3Rs), the BMBF is pursuing the goal of strengthening networking and exchange between research, industry and regulatory authorities. Through more intensive cooperation between scientists working in animal experiments, developers of alternative methods, the research community among themselves, and the regulatory authorities, a better exchange should succeed that can lead to an increased use of alternative methods and thus to a short- and medium-term reduction of animal experiments and, in the medium to long term, to their complete replacement.

To this end, the BMBF is initiating, among other activities, analog and digital network events and would like to create a digital platform for networking in the future as well as bundle existing event and training offerings. Further measures for the expansion and cooperation of the network are being planned.

Invited by the BMBF, the 3R-Center Tübingen represented by Prof. Dr. Peter Loskill (head of the 3R-Center) and Dr. Silke Keller (head of the 3R-Center business unit) actively participated in the moderation of two virtual discussion tables and subsequently summarized the discussed aspects and contents in a live connection for all participants.

We are very happy to be part of the network and that we were allowed to contribute to the success of this great event!
