What will the medicine of the future look like — and will scientific research still rely on animal testing? These were some of the questions discussed by students at a secondary school in Balingen.

After several months of preparation as part of the “Transfer Wissenschaft Schule” program at the Tübingen School of Education, Pauline from the 3R-Center Tübingen brought cutting-edge biomedical research directly into the classroom.

Together with the students, Pauline explored the 3R principles — Replace, Reduce, and Refine — and discussed why human-relevant research methods are becoming increasingly important. One particularly striking topic was the fact that a huge percentage of results from animal experiments fail to translate successfully to humans.

A central focus of the session was Organ-on-Chip technology, an innovative approach that models human organs on miniature chips. These systems allow for more realistic and human-relevant drug testing and could significantly reduce the need for animal models in the future.

Rather than simply listening to a presentation, the students actively engaged in discussions about the opportunities and limitations of these technologies and debated how quickly a transition toward largely animal-free research could realistically happen. It became clear that scientific progress alone is not enough — regulatory and societal changes will also play a key role.
