3R-Network BW Meeting
On the day before this year’s annual conference, representatives of the 3R-Centers in Baden-Württemberg gathered for a half-day internal network meeting. In addition to a lively exchange on current developments at each center, three new centers were officially welcomed into the network: Hochschule Furtwangen, represented by Prof. Margarete Müller; 3ROCKIT at KIT in Karlsruhe, presented by Prof. Ute Schepers; i3R-Center in Ulm, introduced by Prof. Alexander Kleger.

3R-Network BW Annual Conference 2025
The 3R-Network BW Annual Conference 2025 held on April 1–2, 2025 at the University of Stuttgart’s Vaihingen campus, offered a diverse program featuring engaging presentations, interactive poster sessions, and valuable networking opportunities. The conference covered a broad spectrum of topics in biomedical research, including ex vivo models, refinement strategies, in silico technologies, and de novo model development.
The refinement session was particularly interesting, highlighting the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of simple measures. For example, using urine or feces samples instead of blood for substance analysis or administering drugs with diluted condensed milk rather than using forced application with a syringe. Another highlight was the Science Communication session, providing practical tips for effectively communicating complex scientific content. Suggestions included using shorter sentences and avoiding passive voice. These simple strategies can significantly improve clarity and engagement when presenting scientific information to a broader audience.
Also the exchange with the 3R-Competence Network NRW was enriching. Direct dialogue not only increases the visibility of individual projects beyond regional borders but also strengthens cross-regional collaboration in line with the 3R-principles. Shared challenges and potential synergies were discussed, contributing to the further development of forward-thinking research following the 3R-principles.

Various Engagements of the 3R-Centers Tübingen at the Conference
The 3R-Center Tübingen was actively involved in this year’s 3R-Network BW Annual Conference. Dr. Elena Kromidas chaired the de novo session and during the whole conference, the 3R-Center hosted an information booth. The booth showcased exhibits on the Organ-on-Chip technology, the 3R-principle, ongoing activities, and the new MPS-Core Facility, and became a valuable place for discussions with experts and interested attendees, fostering knowledge exchange and networking.
The 3R-Center also presented two posters in the category 3R-Centers: Outreach, Education & Training: Dr. Elena Kromidas showcased her poster titled „Education and Training Programs to Increase Knowledge and Drive the Adoption of Microphysiological Systems in Academia and Industry“ while Monika Yanovska presented hers on the „Establishment and Operation of a Core Facility for Complex Microphysiological In Vitro Models“ later in the evening.
Outlook 2026: The Network Annual Conference is coming to Tübingen
We are thrilled about the intense exchange, the inspiring conversations, and the valuable insights gained from the conference! With these exciting impressions in mind, we are especially looking forward to next year: In 2026, the 3R-Center Tübingen will host the Network Annual Conference: THE 3R LÄND Conference, right here in Tübingen!
