On December 5th and 6th, 2024, researchers from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and across Europe gathered at Kasteel Bloemendal in Vaals, Netherlands, for the 2nd Annual Meeting of the 3R Competence Network NRW. Under the motto “Science for Tomorrow: Redefining Research with the 3Rs,” the latest innovations in the field of the 3R principles and their application in biomedical research were presented.

A key part of the event was dedicated to presentations on innovative approaches and current challenges related to the 3R principles. Particularly exceptional and engaging topics included the presentation of strategies for identifying “paper mills” and the impact of animal testing on researchers’ mental health. Another highlight was the pitch sessions, where researchers showcased innovative in vitro models intended to replace animal testing. These included kidney organoids, blood-brain barrier models, and the latest solutions in tissue engineering.

Another central aspect of the event was the presentation of innovative concepts and strategies that promote the transition to animal-free methods. Numerous poster presentations featured concepts like virtual reality-based training and organ-on-a-chip models. A strategy for rehoming animals after non-lethal studies was also presented. The 3R-Center Tübingen presented a poster on advanced education and training programs, focusing on a study identifying needs and developing target-specific training programs to promote human-based in vitro methods in research.

The event concluded with a meeting of 3R centers and initiatives, attended by representatives from Germany, Denmark, and France. The valuable exchange with international colleagues highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration to strengthen the 3R principles and promote responsible research.

Overall, the event was an inspiring and highly valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration in advancing the 3R principles. The 3R Center Tübingen is grateful for the enriching experience and eagerly looks forward to next year’s meeting.
